"Little Green"

Artisan Construction Press Release

For immediate release:

Artisan Construction, Inc, is pleased to announce that one of its recent projects, the Charlottesville Waldorf School Classroom Building, has just been named a Go Green Citation winner by the James River Chapter of the US Green Building Council (USGBC). Completed in September 2007, "Little Green," as it is affectionately known, is the first phase in a series of projects by the Charlottesville Waldorf Foundation’s Greenest School in America Campaign.

Artisan Construction, Inc. is a full-service general contractor specializing in green and sustainable custom homes, renovations, and commercial projects. For Little Green, Artisan Project Manager Marilyn Moedinger, LEED AP, provided both design and construction management services. Moedinger is a 2005 graduate of UVA’s School of Architecture, and is one of three designers on staff at Artisan.

Little Green utilized many green and sustainable methods and materials throughout construction, and is currently anticipating a LEED Silver rating from the USGBC. With 30% less energy consumption than a comparable school building, recycled and sustainably harvested building materials, low VOC glues, paints, sealants, and caulks, and a high performance HVAC system, Little Green is a healthy, clean place for Waldorf’s students. During construction, Artisan diverted an incredible 77% of construction waste away from the landfill by recycling and reusing materials. Other green measures include water saving fixtures, all stormwater retained onsite, high performance windows and insulation, and non-toxic treated wood used for exterior decks.

Additionally, In each classroom, there is a different locally harvested Virginia hardwood floor. When students are learning about local ecosystems and tree species, they can go to each classroom to see maple, white oak, red oak, hickory, beech, or ash, all of which was sustainably harvested from farms and forests in southwest Virginia. Charlottesville Waldorf School sees green and sustainable measures, like the flooring, as an integral part to their educational mission.
