Why build green?

Green = Protection
Indoor air pollution is the most dangerous enemy you've never seen. The Environmental Protection Agency consistently ranks it as one of the top five environmental risks to public health. The agency estimates that half of the nation's 115,000 elementary and secondary public schools have significant indoor air pollution problems.

As you read this, it is possible that the building in which you are sitting has played a part in someone's acute respiratory disease, allergies, asthma and Sick Building Syndrome. Culprits include poor indoor air quality, emissions-emitting construction materials and chemicals in treated wood, paint and carpet adhesives.

Green = Productivity
Studies show that adults working in green buildings miss fewer days of work and are more productive. Students in green schools have been found to be more productive and learn better, and faster.

Green = Energy Conservation
Regular buildings use massive amounts of energy while sending dangerous pollutants into the environment. The 76 million residential and nearly 5 million commercial buildings in the U.S. use more than one-third of the energy consumed in the nation.not to mention nearly two-thirds of the electricity.

Green = More Green
Building green saves money. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy puts that savings at $1.5 billion. That is 25% of the $6 billion spent by schools throughout the country each year. This savings can directly translate into tax cuts, increased teacher salaries or extra programs to benefit all children.
