Waldorf Construction Update (4/29/2010)

CWS Community,

We're getting some attention lately from those outside our community.  We were recently interviewed about the building project by Charlottesville's CBS19, which may be viewed here.  Also, because we are using the innovative and uber-green "Passive House" model, we're getting attention from the architectural world, as well as the Passive House Institute.  As the first Passive House school in America, we're serving as a model for others who likewise see the merit in 70-80% reduction in energy cost!

Our priorities are two-fold: to build in such a way that the preservation, sustainability and stewardship of the earth is honored; and, to create with "bricks and mortar" the form in which the richness of the Waldorf curriculum can be more fully integrated at CWS.  We aren't the only ones who value the pedagogy of the Waldorf School!

Eric Utne, founder, publisher, and former editor-in-chief of Utne Reader (described by The New York Times as "one of the most distinctive voices in magazine journalism"), then a Waldorf teacher and now a social entrepreneur, said this:

"My son Leif attended a Waldorf school from nursery through eighth grade. Even more gratifying than his specific achievements are his ongoing infatuation with learning and absence of incapacitating cynicism. ... Waldorf schools generally turn out young people who get into the colleges of their choice, but more importantly are well prepared for life. I hope this form of education becomes the basis for public school curriculum throughout the United States. And I hope it happens soon."

Marjorie Spock, author of "Teaching as a lively art," teacher, and sister of Dr. Benjamin Spock who inspired Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" that led to Earth Day, said this:

"Waldorf education enables young people to be in love with the world as the world should be loved."

Please scroll down to see an architectural rendering of the project. These views were generated from a preliminary design that has been only slightly modified since.  The size of the buildings and their location on the site are still the same.  The people in the drawings have asked to remain anonymous, except the one with arms-outstretched.  That one is the Chair of the Foundation, who is exclaiming with relief and enthusiasm, "AT LAST!"  :)
